LESSON 35 – PARENTING STYLES (PART 1)

📅 3rd May 2026

📖 1 Samuel 2:22–25, 29
🧠 Memory Verse: Luke 15:12

🔵 CORE FOUNDATION

🔹 Theme Overview

This week’s lesson introduces believers to different parenting styles and how they shape the lives, character, and destiny of children.

The lesson highlights:

  • The responsibility of parenting

  • The balance between love (responsiveness) and discipline (demandingness)

  • How different parenting approaches produce different outcomes

🧠 Parenting is not just biological — it is spiritual stewardship.
🧠 The way children are raised determines how they think, behave, and relate to God and society.

👉 “Your parenting style today becomes your child’s future reality.”

🧠 MEMORY VERSES

🔹 Adult: Luke 15:12 (KJV)
And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living.

🔹 YAYA: Luke 15:12 (NKJV)
And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me.’ So he divided to them his livelihood.

📖 KEY SCRIPTURE

1 Samuel 2:22–25, 29

This passage shows Eli’s parenting failure:

  • He heard about his sons’ sins but did not enforce discipline (v22–24)

  • His correction lacked authority and consequence (v25)

  • God rebuked him for honouring his sons above Him (v29)

👉 Parenting without structure can lead to spiritual and moral collapse.

🟦 SECTION 1: FOUNDATIONAL TEXT REVIEW

📖 1 Samuel 2:22–25, 29 — Eli’s Parenting Style

From the passage we learn:

  • Eli was aware of his sons’ misconduct (v22)

  • He rebuked them verbally but did not enforce discipline (v23–24)

  • His sons ignored correction (v25)

  • God judged Eli for failing to restrain them (v29)

🧠 Insight: Correction without authority produces rebellion.

🔎 Reflection: What happens when parents speak but do not enforce?

🟦 SECTION 2: UNDERSTANDING PARENTING STYLES

Parenting styles are defined by two key dimensions:

  • Responsiveness (Love, warmth, support, sensitivity)

  • Demandingness (Discipline, control, expectations)

🔥 A. PERMISSIVE PARENTS

High love, low discipline, warm but lenient

  • Allow children to make decisions without guidance (1 Samuel 2:22–24)

  • Rules are weak or not enforced (1 Samuel 3:13)

  • Yield to children’s demands to avoid conflict (Luke 15:12)

Result:

  • Poor decision-making

  • Lack of discipline

  • Potential creativity but weak structure

🔥 B. NEGLECTFUL / UNINVOLVED PARENTS

Low love, low discipline

  • Children are left to fend for themselves

  • No guidance or correction (1 Kings 1:5–6)

  • Weak emotional connection (1 Samuel 16:10–11; 2 Samuel 14:28)

Result:

  • Emotional withdrawal

  • Truancy and instability

  • Fear of dependence (Proverbs 29:15)

🟨 SECTION 3: DISCIPLINE-BASED STYLES

🔥 A. AUTHORITARIAN PARENTS

Strict - High discipline, low love

  • Enforce strict rules without emotional consideration

  • Expect obedience without dialogue

  • Use harsh discipline (“tough love”) (1 Samuel 20:30)

Result:

  • Low self-esteem

  • Aggression

  • Poor social development

🔥 B. AUTHORITATIVE PARENTS

High love, high discipline (Balanced Parenting)

  • Set clear rules with understanding

  • Communicate openly (Genesis 22:7–8)

  • Allow learning through consequences

  • Nurture and guide (Ephesians 6:4)

  • Teach values intentionally (Proverbs 22:6)

Result:

  • Self-discipline

  • Emotional stability

  • Independent thinking

  • Strong character

👉 This is the biblically balanced model.

🟩 SECTION 4: CONNECT THE DOTS

All parenting styles produce outcomes:

  • Permissive → Freedom without structure → Instability

  • Neglectful → Absence → Emotional damage

  • Authoritarian → Control without love → Fear and rebellion

  • Authoritative → Balance → Growth and maturity

👉 Parenting is a seed system — what is planted is what is harvested.

🟧 SECTION 5: HEART TRANSFORMATION

🔎 Ask Yourself:

  • Am I parenting with balance or extremes?

  • Do I correct without relationship?

  • Do I love without structure?

  • Am I intentional about shaping my child’s future?

A godly parent must:

  • Love deeply

  • Guide firmly

  • Correct wisely

  • Model Christ consistently

🟥 SECTION 6: LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

🏆 COMPETITION PREPARATION

Focus on:

✔ Definition of parenting styles
✔ Differences between the four types
✔ Scriptural examples (Eli, Abraham, etc.)
✔ Outcomes of each parenting style
✔ Why authoritative parenting is best

Be able to explain:

  • Why Eli failed as a parent

  • The danger of permissive parenting

  • The balance in authoritative parenting

  • How parenting affects destiny
